A new law goes into effect today that is going to get a lot of people in some very hot water. If you've been watching or reading the local news lately, you’ve probably been told for months now that effective July 1, 2026, you can legally use deadly force in Tennessee to protect your property.

That is partially true—but the parts the media is leaving out are exactly what will land a well-meaning homeowner in a jail cell.

When I look at what our community needs from a Shelby County Commissioner, the absolute baseline is transparency, real public education, and common sense. As someone who knows how the justice system operates firsthand, I refuse to watch our citizens get fed dangerous, half-baked summaries of criminal law that could cost them their freedom.

Here is what the updated statute actually says: you can use deadly force to protect property if you are in fear of death, grave bodily injury, or sexual assault.

Let’s be completely honest: you could already do that under the existing law.

The only thing that actually changes under this new law is that you no longer have a "duty to retreat" if someone is actively breaking into your house or vehicle. If you choose to engage them, and they produce a weapon or take another action that would place a reasonable person in fear of death or grave injury, and you put them in the dirt, the law is now clear. Even though the incident began over property, your act of self-defense is legally justified.

That’s it. That is the whole change.

Because the headlines have been so incredibly misleading, let me be explicitly clear about what you still cannot do:

• No, you cannot snipe someone from your window just because they are breaking into your car.

• No, you cannot shoot trespassers merely for stepping onto your land.

• No, you cannot shoot someone in the back because they are running away with your lawnmower.

Look at the difference between what protects your freedom and what forfeits it:

• The Justified Reality: Someone breaks into your house at 3:00 AM while you and your family are inside? That is reasonable fear. You see someone breaking into your car, you yell at them to stop, and they turn around and pull a gun on you? That is reasonable fear.

• The Criminal Reality: You see a guy taking some tools out of your backyard shed, you yell, and he takes off running? Better not pull that trigger. If you do, you are the one who will be facing felony charges.

The way the media has covered this is going to get a good number of everyday people criminally charged. They are selling clicks; I’m trying to protect your life and your liberty.
